This Is Why

For millions of White Americans, their understandings of the trials and tribulations experienced by four centuries of African descendants living on this continent are highly deficient, the result of America’s failure to teach all children the truth about how White Privilege and its most egregious offspring, racism, has brought Godless evil to bear upon millions of people of color living in the Western Hemisphere.

If the truth had been uniformly taught when we Boomers rose to positions of influence in American school systems, it would be common knowledge that today’s Southern Republicans and their ilk (who have metastasized in other parts of our country) are the direct ideological descendants of folks who were Southern Democrats until LBJ, a Democrat, managed to push through the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts in the 1960s.

If we had taught the truth, it would be common knowledge that the spawn of former Southern Democrats—those who comprise a portion of the Republican base and those who serve as the majority leadership of the Republican Party–are the ideological descendants of Confederate traitors who created the Ku Klux Klan, originated the Black Codes, began and fueled the practice of public lynchings, and provided the impetus for decades of Jim Crow injustices.

Those descendant evils of the Confederacy, as well as the current efforts of Southern Republicans (and their metastasized adherents elsewhere in America) to deter African Americans and other Americans of color from voting, represent the enduring scourge of the Confederacy, and a truth that is rarely taught is that the root cause of the Confederate Rebellion was about the ability of individual states to maintain a slave-based economy. Period.

The manifesto driving the Rebellion, according to the Confederacy’s vice president, Alexander Hamilton Stephens, was that the original American Union “rested upon the assumption of the equality of the races,” he explained. But “our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas: its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.”

The truth is, the intention of this powerful and Godless proclamation is what still drives the conservative Republican base and leadership, was at the root of the January Insurrection, drives the current overt actions of white supremacist groups, and is at the root of the GOP’s drive to deny the vote to as many people of color as they can.

This is why the outrage of black folks is understandable and not disproportionate.

This is why those of us who believe in equality must fight even harder in the political realm to stand up to those who are doing everything they can to see the South Rise Again: the Mitch McConnells and Kevin McCarthys, the Jim Jordans and Majorie Taylor Greenes, the Proud Boys and all who support them.

This is why state laws against the teaching of truth must be eradicated; otherwise, the American Dream of Equality and the pursuit of happiness for every American citizen—both now on life support—will disappear forever.

This is why we must Never Forget.
